A realistic route through Tamil Nadu and Kerala that protects the experience from long daily drives and constant hotel changes.

Why this route works

Ten days is enough for a meaningful introduction, but not for every major destination in South India. A strong first itinerary should create contrast—city, heritage, hills and water—without losing whole days to ambitious transfers.

This route starts in Chennai, follows the coast to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry, continues through Tamil Nadu to Madurai, then crosses into Kerala for Munnar, Kochi and the backwaters. It works in either direction depending on flights.

Days 1–2: Chennai and Mahabalipuram

Use the first day to recover from travel and see a focused side of Chennai rather than attempting the whole city. On day two, continue to Mahabalipuram for coastal monuments, stone-carving traditions and an overnight near the sea.

Starting slowly helps international travellers adjust and gives domestic travellers a more relaxed beginning than driving straight from the airport into a long circuit.

Day 3: Puducherry

Drive south along the coast and arrive with time to walk the heritage quarter, explore the Tamil side of town and enjoy the promenade later in the day. One night is possible; two is better for a slower trip.

Days 4–5: Thanjavur or Chettinad and Madurai

Choose one meaningful stop between Puducherry and Madurai. Thanjavur suits travellers focused on Chola architecture and art; Chettinad suits travellers drawn to mansion heritage and regional food.

In Madurai, combine the temple area with markets, neighbourhood life and a well-timed evening visit. A guide adds context and helps you move respectfully through a living sacred space.

Days 6–7: Munnar

Cross the Western Ghats toward Munnar. The journey itself is scenic but winding, so do not overload the arrival day. Use the next day for tea landscapes, a plantation experience and selected viewpoints rather than chasing every advertised stop.

Day 8: Kochi

Continue to Kochi and spend the late afternoon or evening around Fort Kochi and Mattancherry. Depending on your priorities, a second Kochi night may be more valuable than an extra hill activity.

Days 9–10: Backwaters and departure

Finish in Kumarakom or Alappuzha. Choose between a private day cruise, an overnight houseboat and a lakeside resort according to comfort, privacy and flight timing.

On the final day, transfer to Kochi airport. A late flight gives more flexibility; an early departure may require the last night closer to the city.

What to remove when you prefer a slower trip

  • Skip Thanjavur or Chettinad and add the night to Puducherry or Kochi.
  • Use only one hill destination rather than adding Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar.
  • Choose a private backwater cruise with a resort instead of changing hotels for one night.
  • Fly into one city and out of another to avoid backtracking.
